It all started about four years ago when I had about four koi with a few goldfish in a small pond. Then about two years ago I built and 2000ltr liner pond to give the koi some more space to swim. It was serviced by a submersible pump and a small box filter filled with onion bags . This went ok for a few months, but when we added a few more larger koi, the water quality went real bad. After some time when we visited other koi members, we realized that our pond was not big enough to keep koi. Not wanting to do the same mistake again, we decided to build a proper koi pond by a professional pond builder. As the work started I had forgotten that not far from where the pond was being built there was a big water pitt which was taking all the water from the garage gutter. During the digging the pitt busted and it created a disaster with all the water getting into the semi built pond. The pond builder did a wonderful job to stop the water getting in and building a beautiful formal koi pond. The filter is inside the garage and consist of two large vortex holding 700 ltrs each filled with Japanese matting , a 55 watt UV and a pond aeration by Air Tech. The pump is a 2 HP Continental pump. We backwash both Vortex once a week and use Pond Prime by Seachem to remove chlorine and ammonia when adding new water. The size of the pond is 3.6 mtr long, 2.6 mtr wide and 1.6 mtr deep. It hold approx 16000 ltrs. We added a few more koi mostly kohaku, sanke and showas which we buy from other koi members. A present we have 22 beautiful koi and they are getting used to come and feed from our hands. In summer we feed them a variety of food, mixed pellets with wheat germ and colour enhances and live clean garden worms. They love pumpkin and peas, wholemeal bread and prawns, not a bad diet for our living jewels! |
